In the paper under review, the authors investigate a spectral problem for an infinite high-contrast periodic medium perturbed by a compact defect. The size of periodicity is \(\epsilon\) and the contrast scales as \(\epsilon^2\). By exploiting two-scale homogenization, the authors study an eigenvalue problem of the type \[ A_\epsilon u^\epsilon=\lambda(\epsilon) u^\epsilon\, . \] Then they derive explicit limit equations for the localized modes and the corresponding eigenvalues. Moreover, they prove the existence of eigenvalues \(\lambda(\epsilon)\) near the eigenvalues \(\lambda_0\) of the limit operator with \(\epsilon^{1/2}\) error bounds.
