The Minimal Model Program is an important conjectural framework for the classification of higher dimensional algebraic varieties. One of the main tools is the so-called base point free theorem that asserts that a nef line bundle \(L\) over a Kawamata log terminal projective pair \((X, \Delta)\) defined over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero is semiample provided that \(L - (K_X + \Delta)\) is nef and big. The proof strongly relies on resolution of singularities and Kawamata-Viehweg vanishing theorem and so it is not valid in positive characteristic. In [\textit{D. Martinelli} et al., Algebra Number Theory 9, No. 3, 725--747 (2015; Zbl 1317.14035)] the authors prove the base point free theorem for big line bundles on a three-dimensional log canonical projective pair defined over the algebraic closure of a finite field. In the paper under review, the authors drop the bigness condition when the characteristic is larger than five. Moreover, they show that given a three-dimensional log-canonical projective pair \((X, \Delta)\) defined over the algebraic closure of a finite field such that \(-(K_X + \Delta)\) is nef and big, in general \(X\) is not a Mori Dream space, contrary to what was previously expected.
