    A quasiconformal extension problem encountered in the theory of locally quasiconformal manifolds is solved. Main theorem: If \(\mathbb{R}^ n_ +=\{x \in \mathbb{R}^ n | x_ n \geq 0\}\), \(n\geq 2\), if \(X_ 0\) is either the subset \(\mathbb{R}^ p\), \(0 \leq p<n\), or \(\mathbb{R}^ p_ +\), \(0<p<n\), of \(\mathbb{R}^{n-1}=\partial \mathbb{R}^ n_ +\), if \(X=\{x \in \mathbb{R}^ n_ +\mid (x_ 1,\dots,x_{n-1}) \in X_ 0\}\), and if \(f\) is a quasiconformal homeomorphism of \(\mathbb{R}^{n-1}\) with \(fX_ 0=X_ 0\), then \(f\) can be extended to a quasiconformal homeomorphism \(F\) of \(\mathbb{R}^ n_ +\) with \(FX=X\) such that \(F\mid \text{int} \mathbb{R}^ n_ +\) is bi-Lipschitz in the hyperbolic metric. Omitting the last property \(F | X\) can be prescribed. The absolute case \(X=\mathbb{R}^ n_ +\) is due to \textit{P. Tukia} and \textit{J. Väisälä} [Ann. Math., II. Ser. 115, 331-348 (1982; Zbl 0484.30017)]. An analogous result for locally quasiconformal homeomorphisms is also proved.
