Let \(\{b_n\}\) be a sequence of real numbers, \(b_n\to 0\), \(\sum^\infty_{n=1}| b_n-b_{n+1}| <\infty\), \(\gamma_n=\sum^\infty_{k=n}| b_k-b_{k+1}| \) and \(1<p<\infty\). If \(\sum^\infty_{n=1}\gamma_n^p n^{p-2}<\infty\), or if \(\sum^\infty_{n=1}\gamma_n n^{-1/p}<\infty\), the author proves that the series \(\sum^\infty_{n=1}b_n \sin nx\) is the Fourier series of a function \(g\in L^p \) and gives estimates of the best \(L^p\)-approximation of \(g\) by trigonometric polynomials, which depend on \(n\) and on the sequence \(\gamma_{n+1},\gamma_{n+2},\dots\)
