The \((m,n)\) blended functions defined on \([-1,1]^2\) is the infinite dimensional linear space of polynomials of two variables \(p\) such that \(\delta^{m+n}p / \delta^m\delta^n =0\). This work proves fundamental properties of best one-sided \(L^1\)-approximation by blended functions of order \((2,2)\). For example, the best approximations from above inherit the smoothness of the function being approximated, and the approximation from below is a blending-spline function.
