The authors investigate \(C^{1}\)-regularity in two dimensions of the minimizers to a variational problem \[ \min_{u\in A}\int_{\Omega }F(\nabla u)\,dx, \] where \(A\) denotes the set of admissible functions, \(\Omega \subset \mathbb R^2\) is open and \(F: \mathbb R^2\rightarrow \mathbb R^2\) is nonsmooth and strictly convex. In their proofs, refined two-dimensional techniques are employed. In the first part of the paper, they provide conditions which guarantee that the gradient of the minimizer has the uniform modulus of continuity in \( \Omega \). In the second part, they investigate \(C^{1}\)-regularity of a variational problem arising from random surfaces and random tilings upon some additional assumptions on the integrand.
