Let \(\Omega\) be a domain in the complex plane and let \(F\) be a relatively closed subset of \(\Omega\). The authors consider approximation of continuous functions on \(F\) in the \(C^ m\)-norm. The approximating functions are either holomorphic in a neighbourhood of \(F\) or meromorphic in \(\Omega\) with poles off \(F\) or holomorphic in \(\Omega\). The main results are analogous to some classical theorems for uniform approximation. In particular there are counterparts of Runge's theorem, Roth's fusion lemma, and Arakeljan's theorem. There is also a characterization of \(m\)-times differentiable functions on \(\Omega\) which can be approximated in the \(C^ m\)-norm on \(F\) by functions meromorhic in \(\Omega\) with poles off \(F\).
