The author proves one direction of the theorem of F. John characterizing the ellipsoid of maximal volume contained in a convex body. This theorem is related to the two further, nice and elementary, results of the author: 1. The regular \(n\)-dimensional simplex \(T\) circumscribed the unit ball, contains \(k\)-dimensional balls of maximal radius \(r(n,k)=\sqrt{n(n+1)/k(k+1)}\) which lie in the \(k\)-faces of \(T\). 2. Let \(C\) be an \(n\)-dimensional convex body whose inscribed ellipsoid of maximal volume is the unit ball. Then \(C\) does not contain \(k\)- dimensional ellipsoids of larger volume than that of a \(k\)-dimensional ball of radius \(r(n,k)\).
