Let \(R\) be a Noetherian ring and consider the tensor product \(A \otimes_R B\) of two Noetherian algebras \(A\) and \(B\). This paper studies the failure of this tensor product to preserve certain natural ring properties of \(A\) and \(B\) over \(R\). If \(k\) is a field and \(A \otimes_k B\) is Noetherian, it is known that \(A \otimes_k B\) is Cohen-Macaulay if and only if both \(A\) and \(B\) are. A similar result is known for the Gorenstein property and for the regularity property. Turning to \(A \otimes_R B\), this paper measures the defect of the Cohen-Macaulay, Gorenstein, complete intersection and regularity properties for this tensor product. To achieve this, the authors obtain results measuring such invariants as the Krull dimension, depth, injective dimension, type and embedding dimension of \(A \otimes_R B\) in terms of those of \(A\) and \(B\) under some flatness condition.
