This interesting paper is part of the body of results that have arisen from the profound question of \textit{H. Furstenberg} [Math. Syst. Theory 1, 1-49 (1967; Zbl 0146.28502)]: if \(\mu\) is a non-atomic Borel measure on the circle that is invariant under multiplication by \(p\) and \(q\) mod \(1\) (for distinct primes \(p\) and \(q\)), must \(\mu\) be Lebesgue measure? Here an approach of \textit{B. Host} [Isr. J. Math. 91, 419-428 (1995; Zbl 0839.11030)] to a related problem is generalized as follows. Call an integer sequence `\(p\)-Host' if, for any Borel measure \(\mu\) on the circle invariant under multiplication by \(p\) mod \(1\), the sequence \((c_nx)\) mod \(1\) is uniformly distributed for \(\mu\)-almost every \(x\). This property was shown to hold for \(c_n=q^n\), \(q\) relatively prime to \(p\) by Host (ibid.). In this paper the result is extended to rather general classes of polynomial and recurrence sequences. Related results are found for pairs of toral endomorphisms, one of which is diagonal.
