A deformation X\({\mathcal X}\to (S,0)\) of the compact complex space X is called locally trivial if, for every \(x\in X\), the deformation germ (\({\mathcal X},x)\to (S,0)\) is isomorphic to the trivial deformation (X,x)\(\times (S,0)\) of (X,x). The deformation is said to be locally trivial semiuniversal if it has the usual versality property with respect to locally trivial deformations. The main object of this paper is to show that any compact complex space admits a locally trivial semiuniversal deformation, thus answering in the affirmative a question raised by G. M. Greuel and U. Karras. The authors' method applies also to various other situations and allows them to obtain similar results for deformations of holomorphic mappings and for coherent modules.
