The authors announce formulas for the motivic Chern and homology Hirzebruch classes of a toric variety \(X\) in terms of the dualizing sheaves and Todd classes of the closures of torus orbits in \(X\). Similar formulas are stated for any torus invariant algebraic subset of \(X\). The authors also sketch applications of their formulas to counting lattice points in polytopes.
