Let \(D\) be an open subset of \(\mathbb{R}^m\) for \(m\geq2\). Assume henceforth that \(D\) has \(R\)-smooth boundary. This means that for any point \(P\) of the boundary of \(D\), there exist two open balls of radius \(R\) so \(B_1\subset D\), \(B_2\subset\mathbb{R}^m-\bar D\), and \(\bar B_1\cap\bar B_2=P\). In this setting, the authors examine upper and lower bounds for the heat content \(H_D(t)\), where \(D\) has initial temperature 1 and the complement of \(D\) has initial temperature 0. Let \(\mathcal{H}\) be the \((m-1)\)-dimensional Hausdorff measure of the boundary. They show the following result. { Theorem. } If \(D\) has \(R\)-smooth boundary and finite Lebesgue measure \(D\), then for any \(t>0\) one has \[ \| H_D(t)-| D|+\pi^{-1/2}\mathcal{H}t^{1/2}\|\leq m^32^{m+2}| D| R^{-2}t. \] A number of other useful estimates are obtained. Section 1 of the paper contains the statement of results. Finally, Section 2 deals with geometrical results for open sets with \(R\)-smooth boundary and finite Lebesgue measure. Section 3 treats the above theorem and establishes other results.
