Let \(H^{p}\) (\(1 < p < \infty\)) be the standard Hardy space on the unit disk \(\mathbb D\) in the complex plane, and let \(\mathbb P\) be the Riesz projection of \(L^{p}=L^{p}(\mathbb T)\) (\(\mathbb T=\partial \mathbb D\)) onto \(H^{p}\). The authors introduce and analyze Toeplitz-like operators with rational symbols having poles on \(\mathbb T\). Such operators can be unbounded and are defined as follows. Let \(\mathrm{Rat}\) denote the space of rational complex functions and let \(\mathrm{Rat}_{0}(\mathbb T)\) denote the subspace of strictly proper functions from \(\mathrm{Rat}\) with all poles on \(\mathbb T\). For \(\omega\in\mathrm{Rat}\), the Toeplitz-like operator \(T_\omega: H^p\to H^p\), \(1<p<\infty\), is defined as follows: \(\mathrm{Dom}(T_\omega)=\lbrace g\in H^p \ |\ \omega g = f + \rho \text{ with } f\in L^p,\,\rho\in \mathrm{Rat}_{0}(\mathbb T)\rbrace\), \(T_\omega g=\mathbb P f\). If \(\omega\) has no poles on \(\mathbb T\), this definition coincides with the case of classical Toeplitz operators. The authors give necessary and sufficient conditions for \(T_\omega\) to have closed range. It is shown that \(T_\omega\) is Fredholm if and only is its symbol \(\omega\) does not vanish on \(\mathbb T\) and the index formula is given. The authors introduce and investigate the matrix representation of \(T_\omega\). For the entire collection see [Zbl 1411.47002].
