\textit{S.-T. Yau} [Ann. Math. Stud. 102, 669--706 (1982; Zbl 0479.53001)] conjectured that any compact Riemannian three-manifold admits an infinite number of closed immersed minimal surfaces. In the paper under review, the authors prove this conjecture in the positive Ricci curvature setting, by using the Almgren-Pitts min-max theory for the area functional. More precisely, they show that every compact Riemannian manifold with positive Ricci curvature and dimension at most 7 contains infinitely many smooth, closed, embedded minimal hypersurfaces. In the last section, some open problems related with the geometry of these minimal hypersurfaces are mentioned.
