Let T be a bounded linear operator in a Banach space. The reduced minimum modulus of T is defined by \[ \gamma (T)=\inf \{\| Tx\|:dist(x,\ker T)=1\}\;if\;T\neq 0\quad and\quad \gamma (T)=0\;if\;T=0. \] In this paper the properties of the reduced minimum modulus of operators in complex Hilbert space setting are investigated. In section 1 some general properties of \(\gamma\) (T) and a related matrix representation of T are considered. In section 2 it is proved that the discontinuities of the function \(\gamma\) (T-\(\lambda)\), \(\lambda\in {\mathbb{C}}\), form a countable set and \(\lim_{\lambda \to \mu}\gamma (T-\lambda)\) always exists, that the set \(\sigma_{\gamma}(T)=\{\mu \in {\mathbb{C}}\lim_{\lambda \to \mu}\gamma (T-\lambda)=0\}\) is closed, non-empty and it has the following property: Let f be a complex analytic function defined in a neighborhood of \(\sigma\) (T), then \(\sigma_{\gamma}(f(T))=f(\sigma_{\gamma}(T)).\) The author goes on to show that the complement of \(\sigma_{\gamma}(T)\) is the minimal open set where T-\(\lambda\) has an analytic generalized inverse. In section 3 the existence of \(\lim_{n\to \infty}\gamma (T^ n)^{1/n}\) for semi-Fredholm operators are established. In conclusion, section 4, the effect of a compact perturbation K on \(\sigma_{\gamma}(T+K)\) is examined.
