Let M be an n-dimensional Lorentzian manifold which is semi-symmetric, i.e., its curvature tensor satisfies the condition \(R\cdot R=0\), and let \(f: M\to E_ 1^{n+1}\) be an isometric immersion from M into Minkowski space \(E_ 1^{n+1}\). The authors show that at every point \(x\in M\), where the type number of f is \(\geq 3\), the shape operator can be diagonalized. Therefore they can prove: If M is connected and complete and the type number of f is \(\geq 3\) at least at one point, then M is a Riemannian product \(S^ k_ 1\times E^{n-k}\) or \(S^ k\times E_ 1^{n-k}\) and f has a corresponding factorization. The proof is analogous to \textit{K. Nomizu}'s classification in the Riemannian situation [see Tôhoku Math. J., II. Ser. 20, 46-59 (1968; Zbl 0174.533)].
