The author develops some basic results for Spencer cohomology and applies them to affine algebraic varieties. Let \(A=k[X]\) be algebra of regular functions on the affine manifold \(X\). The Spencer index \(\sigma^{i,r}_{t}(x)\) for a point \(x\in X\) and the maximal ideal \(\mu\subset k[X]\) of this point is equal to \[ \dim\frac{\mu^{r}H_{t}^{i}(A)_{\mathcal K}}{\mu^{r+1}H_{t}^{i}(A)_{\mathcal K}} \] where \(H_{t}^{i}(A)_{\mathcal K}\) is the Spencer cohomology. (The dimension is taken over the residue field \(A/\mu\).) Then, \(\sigma^{i,r}_{t}\) is shown to be an invariant of local rings and completed local rings. The support of a Spencer cohomology of a \(k[X]\) is contained in the singular locus of \(X\). This implies some description of singularities on \(X\) via Spencer indices. Homological properties of Spencer jet-complexes are determined. Some Spencer cohomologies of algebraic varieties where transversal intersections occur are calculated. Properties of basic operations in Spencer cohomology are described.
