\textit{Ch. Kahane} [Am. Math. Mon. 76, 171--173 (1969; Zbl 0179.45802)] proved the following theorem: If a linear operator mapping each of the spaces \(C[a,b]\) and \(C^1[a,b]\) boundedly into itself commutes with differentiation, it must be a constant multiple of the identity. He also gave without proof a characterization of commutators with the operator \(d^2/dt^2\). The purpose of the present paper is to generalize Kahane's theorem for a right invertible operator \(D\) in the sense studied extensively by the author [e.g. \textit{D. Przeworska-Rolewicz}, Algebraic Analysis. Dordrecht: Kluwer Academic Publishers (1988; Zbl 0696.47002)]. As a consequence the author gives a characterization of commutators with an arbitrary power \(D^n\).
