This paper is devoted to a study of certain important properties of nonstationary multivariate subdivision schemes that are typically used for designing surfaces or multivariate functions. Specifically, the authors start from a sequence of exponential polynomials and investigate the subdivision limit obtained by such a scheme from this starting function. The key result is a characterization of those subdivision schemes that have a reproduction property, i.e., schemes where the subdivision limit always coincides with the starting function. The characterization is essentially given in terms of the well-known zero conditions, but in combination with a few additional algebraic properties of the symbols that belong to the schemes. This allows to construct such schemes with reproduction properties tailored to the application at hand, which may be useful in various modeling applications.
