A Banach function (quasi) norm over a measure space \((X,\mu)\) can be defined as a mapping \(\rho:\mathcal M\to [0,\infty]\) satisfying a (quasi) triangle inequality and some other natural continuity and positivity properties, see [\textit{C. Bennett} and \textit{R. Sharpley}, Interpolation of operators. Boston, MA etc.: Academic Press, Inc. (1988; Zbl 0647.46057), Definition 1.1]. Two important properties that are postulated are that, (1): for measurable sets of finite measure \(\rho(E)<+\infty\) and that (2): \(\int_E f d\mu \leq c_E \rho(f)\) for every measurable \(f\). This norm function defines a (quasi) Banach function space of measurable functions in the natural way. If one restricts the two properties above by asking that (1), (2) only hold for balls instead of all measurable sets, then \(\rho\) is called a ball-function (quasi) norm and the corresponding space is a ball (quasi) Banach function space; see [\textit{Y. Sawano} et al., Diss. Math. 525, 102 p. (2017; Zbl 1392.42021)]. According to the authors of the present paper and of Y. Sawano et al. [loc. cit.] the point of introducing ball (quasi) Banach function spaces is to include Morrey spaces in this framework which are not (quasi) Banach function spaces. The authors consider such ball (quasi)Banach function spaces \(X\) over \(\mathbb R^n\), satisfying a number of additional technical and structural assumptions (e.g. the space supports a certain vector-valued inequality for Hardy-Littlewood type maximal operators, and there is a boundedness for a Hardy-Littlewood type operator on the associate space). In this setup the authors give a (finite) atomic characterisation of the Hardy space \(H_X\) with suitable atoms whose definition is quantitatively related to the assumptions. The Hardy space \(H_X\) is given by a a suitable maximal function definition.
