The authors perform a stability analysis for a single-mass system with two degrees of freedom under the action of radially directed restoring force with stiffening nonlinearity. First, a conservative case is considered with a given initial displacement for one coordinates, and with instability conditions of zero solution for another coordinate. For a particular restoring force, the authors find explicit analytical solution. This solution is used together with Ince-Strutt chart to analyse the Mathieu equation which describes small-amplitude motion. Secondly, the authors consider a generalization of the model by applying periodic excitation force in a fixed direction. There is no exact solution in this case, and the authors use for the analysis the Krylov-Bogolyubov averaging procedure over the period.
