In this paper the authors studied the barrelling instability of a solid cylindrical thick rod by use of finite elasticity theory. In sections 1 and 2 they summarized the kinematics and the constitutive relations of an isotropic, elastic material with special emphasis to Hadamard-Green material. The nonlinear problem under axial compression is presented in section 4. Having this large deformation, they superimposed small deformation on this and investigated the existence of the superposed field (section 5). Finally, by utilizing the proper boundary conditions they obtained the characteristic equation which gives the critical value of load parameter for the instable behavior. This work might be very useful for those researchers working on the mathematical aspects of elastic stability theory.
