A very satisfactory theory of special radicals for near-rings can be built on the class of equiprime near-rings [\textit{G. L. Booth, N. J. Groenewald} and \textit{S. Veldsman}: Commun. Algebra 18, 3111-3122 (1990; Zbl 0706.16025)], and numerous new examples of KA-radicals for near-rings have resulted from this approach. Unfortunately, it does not include a number of important radicals, for example the \(J_ 2\) and Brown-McCoy radicals. In order to remedy this deficiency, the current paper introduces the concept of an overnilpotent radical for 0-symmetric near- rings (this term is used because the more familiar supernilpotent has already been used in the literature in a different context). A definition of a quasi-semi-equiprime near ring is given, and used to define a weakly special class. The overnilpotent radicals are characterized as the upper radicals determined by weakly special classes, among other results. The \(J_ 2\), Brown-McCoy and a number of special radicals are shown to be overnilpotent. The situation for not necessarily 0-symmetric near-rings is briefly investigated.
