A ring is called Gorenstein (in the sense of Iwanaga) if it is Noetherian on both sides and has finite injective dimension on both sides. The first main result of this paper characterizes the path rings associated to a quiver which are Gorenstein. A Grothendieck category \(\mathcal A\) is said to be Gorenstein if (i) any object has finite injective dimension if and only if it has finite projective dimension, (ii) the supremum of projective (resp. injective) dimension over all objects with finite projective (resp. injective) dimension is finite and (iii) \(\mathcal A\) has a generator with finite projective dimension. These categories have finite global Gorenstein dimensions and therefore are the natural framework for doing relative Gorenstein homological algebra. It is shown that if \(R\)-Mod is a Gorenstein category with global Gorenstein dimension \(n\), then the category of representations of any quiver \((Q,R\text{-Mod})\) is a Gorenstein category of global Gorenstein dimension \(n+1\).
