The boundedness of the positive solutions of the max-type difference equation \[ x_{n+1} = \max\left\{\frac{A_n}{x_n},\frac{B_n}{x_{n-2}}\right\}, \quad n = 0,1,\dots \] is investigated, where \(\{A_n\}\) and \(\{B_n\}\) are sequences of positive numbers and the initial conditions \(x_{-2},x_{-1},x_0\) are positive. Sufficient conditions for the unboundedness of the positive solutions are given when \(\{A_n\}\) is \(p\)-periodic and \(\{B_n\}\) 4-periodic, \(\{A_n\}\) is \(p\)-periodic and \(\{B_n\}\) 8-periodic, \(\{A_n\}\) is \(p\)-periodic and \(\{B_n\}\) \(4k\)-periodic \((k = 2,3,4,\dots)\), and some further conditions hold. Here \(p\) is an arbitrary positive integer.
