The book aims at providing basic mathematical knowledge mainly for business economists. Most of the time the authors abstain from presenting rigorous proofs, but instead try to give a motivation for the necessary definitions and formulas needed. The textbook uses SCILAB to make the necessary calculations especially for examples where the mathematical effort to solve the problem is large. SCILAB is an open source software which is quite useful to solve numerical problems in linear algebra. The book is divided into four major parts. The first part covers topics of elementary mathematics. This is followed by linear algebra, the second part. Also in the second part, economic examples are given in the context of linear algebra solutions. Methods of differential calculus, financial mathematics, and integral calculus are presented in the third part. And the final part four contains a description of SCILAB and the solutions to the problems stated in the various chapters. As the authors mention, chapters 4 to 10 (or 11 with some limitations) should be considered as the programme for a Bachelor study, whereas chapters 3, 10, and 11 are suitable for a Master programme, combined with further developed themes in mathematics.
