Let \({\mathcal T}\) be a triangulated category. Starting with the observation that every homological functor from \({\mathcal T}^{op}\) to the abelian groups is a filtered direct limit of representable functors (a generalization of the Brown representability theorem) the author studies the question whether the category \(H({\mathcal T})\) of homological functors on \({\mathcal T}\) carries the structure of a triangulated category in a way that extends the triangulated structure of \({\mathcal T}\). This is not true in general, which is due to the so-called phantom phenomena. The main result of the article is that if a technical condition is satisfied then \(H({\mathcal T})\) has a triangulated structure. As a non-trivial example it is shown that the derived category \(D^ b(R)\) of finite complexes of finitely generated \(R\)-modules, where \(R\) is a finite-dimensional \(k\)-algebra of global dimension one and of finite representation type, satisfies the condition.
