The Rees representation of a completely O-simple semigroup \(S\) can be interpreted as associating with \(S\) a bipartite graph \(\varGamma\), a group \(G\) and an element of the first cohomology set \(H^{1}(\varGamma,G)\). Then semigroups which are isomorphic give rise to isomorphic graphs and isomorphic groups. Each isomorphism class of semigroups with graph \(\varGamma\) and group \(G\) corresponds to an orbit of \(H^{1}(\varGamma,G)\) under the action of the automorphism groups of \(\varGamma\) and \(G\). A best possible normalisation of \(S\) is given and this leads to a description of the automorphism group of \(S\). All semigroups with graph \(\varGamma\) and group \(G\) can be embedded in a semigroup \(W\) such that isomorphisms between embedded semigroups extend to automorphisms of \(W\). Special cases are considered and the theory is illustrated by the construction of a simple semigroup \(S\) with minimal symmetry, in the sense that its automorphism group is trivial and its translational hull is the union of \(S\) and the identity element.
