The authors investigate locally finite groups that are direct limits of finite symmetric groups or of finite alternating groups. They motivate this study by very briefly mentioning applications to locally finite groups and group rings and analogous results on \(C^*\)-algebras. Their main result is a complete classification of limit groups of direct systems of finite symmetric groups or of finite alternating groups with `strictly diagonal' embeddings. The authors say that an embedding \(d\) of one permutation group \((G,X)\) into another \((H,Y)\) is strictly diagonal if every orbit of \(G\) on \(Y\) (via \(d\)) is permutation isomorphic to \((G,X)\).
