The author studies the oscillatory and nonoscillatory behaviour of quasilinear functional-differential equations of the type \[ \bigl(|y'(t)|^{\alpha-1}y'(t)\bigr)'+ f(t,y(g(t)))=0, \tag{1} \] where \(\alpha >0\), \(g(t)\geq 0\) is continuous on \([a,\infty)\), \(\lim_{t\to\infty}g(t)= \infty \), \(f(t,y)\) is continuous on \([a,\infty)\times {\mathbb{R}}\), decreases in \(t\) and \(yf(t,y)>0\) for each \(y\neq 0\) and each fixed \(t\geq 0\). By the solution of (1) the author means a function \(y\in C^1[T_y,\infty )\), \(T_y\geq a\) such that \(|y'|^{\alpha-1}y'\in C^1[T_y,\infty)\) and satisfies the equation for all sufficiently large \(t\in [T_y,\infty)\). The author divides the set of nonoscillatory solutions into three classes: 1) dominant, for which \(\lim_{t\to\infty }y(t)/t= \text{const} \neq 0\); 2) intermediate, for which \(\lim_{t\to \infty }y(t)/t=0\), \(\lim_{t\to\infty}y(t)= \infty\) or \(-\infty\); 3)subdominant, for which \(\lim_{t\to\infty}y(t)= \text{const.}\neq 0\). In Section 1 necessary and sufficient conditions are obtained for the existence of dominant and subdominant solutions. In Section 2 it is shown that there exists a class of equations of the form (1) for which the oscillation situation can be completely characterized. That is the case when \[ f(t,y(g(t)))= q(t)|y(g(t))|^{\beta -1}y(g(t)), \] where \(\beta\) is a positive constant and \(q(t)\) is a positive continuous function on \([a,\infty)\). In Section 3 it is shown that the results of Sections 1 and 2 can be extended to equations of the form \[ \bigl(p(t)|y'(t)|^{\alpha-1}y'(t)\bigr)'+ f(t,y(g(t)))=0, \] provided \(p(t)\) is a positive continuous function on \([a,\infty)\) and \[ \int_a^{\infty }dt/(p(t))^{1/\alpha}=\infty. \]
