In D. Morrison's mathematical formulation of mirror symmetry, the small quantum cohomology on a Calabi-Yau manifold is used to construct a variation of Hodge structure, the so-called A-variation of Hodge structure [see e.g. the book of \textit{D. A. Cox} and \textit{S. Katz}, Mirror symmetry and algebraic geometry (1999; Zbl 0951.14026)]. In this context, mirror symmetry is interpreted as an isomorphism of polarised variations of Hodge structure. In the paper under review, the authors look at the relationship between the small quantum potential and the A-variation of Hodge structure from an abstract point of view. For this purpose, they introduce Frobenius modules and, roughly speaking, show that these are equivalent to nilpotent orbits whose limiting mixed Hodge structure is of Hodge-Tate type. A quantum potential gives rise to a deformation of Frobenius modules. The main result establishes an explicit correspondence between polarised variations of Hodge structure with appropriate degeneration behaviour and certain deformations of Frobenius modules. It is also shown that this construction relates the A-model variation of Hodge structure with the Gromov-Witten potential on a Calabi-Yau manifold. The main achievement of this article is the construction of a simple and direct correspondence between the holomorphic data in the variation of Hodge structure and the small quantum potential. This provides, for example, a simplified proof for the A-model variation to be indeed a polarised variation of Hodge structure.
