The concept of homeomorphism between topological (or metric) spaces has been generalized in many ways. Borsuk and Molski have introduced two such generalizations, elementary and simple mappings. The main purpose of this paper is to study systematically the class of elementary mappings. The author studies composition properties, product and product factor properties and limit properties of such mappings, proving interesting propositions and offering nice examples. He also proves that for surjective mappings between compact spaces, the classes of elementary and locally elementary mappings coincide. Finally, the author proves that, when the class of elementary mappings between continua contains all the homeomorphisms, has the composition property and is hereditary, then it satisfies some interesting implications.
