The authors present some fully discrete methods for transmission problems associated to the heat equation in free space. The problem is written as a system of time domain boundary integral equations associated to the heat kernel, thus reducing the computational work to the interface between the materials. The discretization of the system is performed using the Galerkin boundary element method in the space and (of multistep or multistage type) in time. Semigroup theory is applied to obtain stability in the spatially semidiscrete scheme. Functional calculus is used to prove the convergence in the fully discrete scheme. The results are compared to a more traditional Laplace domain approach.
