The following two well-known problems of representation theory of semisimple Lie groups are examined by the authors in the light of the theory of Jordan algebras: (1) Extending a unitary representation \(\pi_0\) of a parabolic subgroup \(P\) of a semisimple Lie group \(G\) to a unitary representation of \(G\). (2) Decomposing the tensor product \(\pi_0\otimes \pi_{0'}\otimes \pi_{0''}\). If the Jordan algebras are Euclidean the authors have answered the above two problems in Part I of this paper [\textit{S. Sahi}, Invent. Math. 110, 409-418 (1992; Zbl 0779.22006)] and [the authors, Sel. Math. (N. S.) 4, 11-29 (1998)]. The paper under review deals with the above two problems for non-Euclidean Jordan algebras. The Tits-Koecher-Kantor theory associates a distinguished parabolic subgroup \(P=LN\) of a semisimple Lie group \(G\) to each real semisimple Jordan algebra. Also every non-open \(L\) orbit \(O\) on \(N^*\) admits an \(L\)-equivariant measure \(d\mu\) which is unique up to a scalar multiple. The authors then construct an irreducible unitary representation \(\pi_o\) of \(P\) acting on the Hilbert space \(H_o = L^2(O,d\mu)\) using Mackey theory. The first problem of extending \(\pi_0\) to a unitary representation \(\pi_1\) of \(G\), corresponding to the minimal \(L\)-orbit \(O_1\), and the second problem of decomposing the \(k\)-fold tensor product of \(\pi_1\), where \(k<n\) and \(n\) is the rank of the Jordan algebra, are dealt with in this paper. The solutions to the two problems in the general case will be presented by the authors in a subsequent paper.
