Let \(B\) be a quaternion algebra with center a totally real number field \(K\) of degree \(m\). Let \(n\) be the number of infinite places \(\varphi:K \hookrightarrow \mathbb{R}\) such that \(B\otimes_\varphi \mathbb{R}\) is isomorphic to \(M_2(\mathbb{R})\) and set \(G(\mathbb{R}) = SL(2,\mathbb{R})^n \times SU(2)^{m-n}\). Let \({\mathcal H}\) be the Poincaré upper half plane \(\{z\in\mathbb{C} \mid \text{Im} (z)>0\}\); the quotient of \(G(\mathbb{R})\) by a maximal compact subgroup is isomorphic to \({\mathcal H}^n\). Let \(\rho\) be a ``polymer'' representation of \(G(\mathbb{R})\); let \(L\) be a lattice in \(\mathbb{R}^{2n}\) and let \(\Gamma\) be a cocompact torsion-free discrete subgroup of \(G(\mathbb{R})\) such that \(\rho (\Gamma) L\subset L\). The quotient \(X= \Gamma \backslash {\mathcal H}^n\) is a Hilbert modular variety and one constructs a projective variety \(Y\) with a morphism \(Y\to X\) whose fibers are abelian varieties (a ``Kuga fiber variety''). The author determines the total Chern class of \(Y\).
