The essential aim of the present outstanding book is to consider a wide set of problems arising in the mathematical modeling of mechanical systems under bilateral constraints. In these investigations elastic and viscoelastic deformations and antiplane frictional contact problems are taken into account. All the necessary mathematical tools are given: an elastic antiplane boundary value problem, an elliptic variational inequality of the second type, evolutionary variational inequalities with viscosity, Volterra-type variational inequalities, existence and uniqueness theorems. A general description of mathematical modeling of the processes involved in contact between a deformable body and an obstacle or a foundation is presented. Important new results concern a convergence result for evolutionary variational inequalities with applications to antiplane frictional contact problems. Coulomb's friction law, a modified version of Coulomb's law and the Tresca friction law are considered in which the friction bound is either a function that does not depend on the process variables or depends on the slip or slip rate. The authors present some theorems on the solvability of elliptic variational and quasi variational inequalities, which are crucial tools in deriving existence results for evolutionary variational inequalities. Existence and uniqueness results concerning evolutionary quasivariational inequalities and history-dependent evolutionary variational inequalities are proved. Two types of variational inequalities with a Volterra integral term, the first one elliptic, and the second one evolutionary, are considered. A general description of mathematical modeling of the processes involved in contact between a deformable body and a rigid obstacle or a foundation is presented. Some new results concerning antiplane frictional contact models for elastic or viscoelastic materials with short or long memory are established. The mathematical analysis of the problem covers existence, uniqueness, regularity and time evolution of the solution. This is carried out in the framework of the variational inequality theory. For each model, the authors provide a variational formulation and establish the existence and uniqueness of a weak solution. This volume primarily addresses applied mathematicians working in the field of variational inequalities and their applications, especially those concerned with numerical aspects. However, the book will also be useful for scientists from the application areas, in particular, applied scientists from engineering and physics.
