Erdős-Turán type discrepancy bounds (Q2639894)

Let \(D_ N(x_ n)=\sup | (1/N)\{1\leq n\leq N |\) \(x_ n\in C\}- \sigma (C)|\) be the spherical cap discrepancy, where the supremum is taken over all spherical caps C and \(\sigma\) denotes the normalized surface measure. A recent method of \textit{J. D. Vaaler} [Bull. Am. Math. Soc., New Ser. 12, 183-216 (1985; Zbl 0575.42003)] is used to give an improved version of an inequality of \textit{E. Hlawka} [J. Reine Angew. Math. 330, 1-43 (1982; Zbl 0462.10034)], which involves the spherical harmonics and can be viewed as a generalization of the Erdős-Turan- Koksma inequality for the usual discrepancy of sequences in the unit cube.
