The authors study well-posedness of the Cauchy problem for the nonlinear Schrödinger equation \[ iu_{t}-u_{xx}- | u| ^{2}u= iu-iu \int_{-\infty}^{x} | u(t,\xi)|^2 \,d\xi\tag{1} \] which describes the interaction of an intensive electromagnetic radiation with a nonlinear dispersive medium. They prove that, for all \(u_{0}\in H^{1} (\mathbb{R})\), there exists a unique solution \(u\in H^{1} (\mathbb{R}) \) of (1) satisfying \(u(0)=u_{0}.\) This solution is global for positive times, although it may blow up in a finite negative time provided that \(\| u_{0}\| _{2}>2.\) The blow up time is given by the formula \[ T_{\ast}= -\log\left[ \frac{\left\| u_{0}\right\| _{2}}{\sqrt{\left\| u_{0}\right\| _{2}-2}}\right]. \] Existence of a unique global solution in \(L^{2}(\mathbb{R})\) is also established, and it is shown that the closed ball of radius \(\sqrt {2}\) in \(L^{2}(\mathbb{R}) \) is the minimal global attractor for the flow generated by (1). Finally, a standing wave solution of (1) is determined in the form \[ u(t,x)=\frac{\sqrt{2}}{2}\exp\left( i\theta+\frac{3it}{4}-ix\right) \text{sech}\left( \frac{x+s}{2}\right) , \] and its stability is discussed.
