In [\textit{L. Gruson} et al., Invent. Math. 72, 491--506 (1983; Zbl 0565.14014)], it was shown that if \(C \subset \mathbb{P}^r\), \(r \geq 3\), is a reduced and irreducible non-degenerate curve of degree \(d\), then \(C\) is \((d+2-r)\)-regular in the sense of \textit{D. Mumford} [Lectures on curves on an algebraic surface. Annals of Mathematics Studies 59. Princeton, N.J.: Princeton University Press. (1966; Zbl 0187.42701)]. In the article under review, the authors use the concept of \(\Theta\)-regularity, as defined by \textit{G. Pareschi} and \textit{M. Popa} [J. Am. Math. Soc. 16, No. 2, 285--302 (2003; Zbl 1022.14012)], to prove an analogous result for reduced and irreducible curves embedded in polarized abelian varieties. For instance, in the present article, the authors prove that if \((A,\Theta)\) is a polarized abelian variety of dimension \(r > 1\) and if \(C \subset A\) is a reduced and irreducible curve of degree \(d = \text{deg} \mathcal{O}_C(\Theta)\), then \(C\) is \((4d+2r + 1)\)-\(\Theta\)-regular. Further, if \(\Theta\) is globally generated, then \(C\) is \((d+r+1)\)-\(\Theta\)-regular. In a related direction, the authors also obtain results which concern \(\Theta\)-regularity for Brill-Noether loci attached to Petri general complex curves of genus at least \(3\). A key aspect in the authors' proof of their results is the regularity theory of sheaves on abelian varieties as developed in \textit{G. Pareschi} and \textit{M. Popa}\textit{Pareschi-Popa} [loc. cit.], [J. Algebr. Geom. 13, No. 1, 167--193 (2004; Zbl 1073.14061)] and [Clay Math. Proc. 14, 141--167 (2011; Zbl 1236.14020)].
