The paper deals with the general nonlinear Grad-Mercier type problem \[ \begin{cases}-\Delta u=g(x,|u>u(x)|,u_*'(|u>u(x)|)),\,\,\,\text{in}\,\,\,\Omega,\\ u=0,\,\,\,\text{on}\,\,\,\partial\Omega,\end{cases}\leqno(P) \] where \(\Omega\) is a bounded regular domain of \(\mathbb{R}^2\), \(g:\Omega\times [0,|\Omega|]\times\mathbb{R}\to\mathbb{R}\) is a Carathéodory function which satisfies some additional assumptions, and the above nonstandard operators \(u_*'(|u>u(x)|)\) and \(|u>u(x)|\) are neither local, nor continuous and monotone. By using the Galerkin method and topological degree theory, the authors prove the existence of solutions for the problem \((P)\).
