The article is concerned with shooting techniques for ODE boundary value problems. If several solutions exist, emphasis is put on finding an appropriate start for the Newton iteration generated by the standard shooting method. For this purpose, an additional iteration is introduced which makes heavy use of a priori information on the solution to be approximated, e.g. knowledge about ranges in which the values of the solution at certain points must lie. Such a priori information is required to be given by analytical means. Some examples, including singular problems, illustrate the approach.
