The main result that the author obtains is the following. Let \(G=\mathbf G^F\) be a finite group of Lie type, where \(\mathbf G\) is a simple, connected, reductive group of adjoint type and \(F\) is a Steinberg endomorphism of \(\mathbf G\). Suppose that \(\chi\) is an irreducible character of \(G\) such that \((\chi,\lambda^G)_G=1\) for any linear character \(\lambda\) of a maximal unipotent subgroup \(U\) of \(G\). Then \(\chi=\xi\cdot\text{St}\) for some linear character \(\xi\) of \(G\), with the exception of two families of groups that are listed by the author. -- Furthermore, if \(\chi\) is a regular character of \(G\) such that \((\chi,1_U^G)_G=1\), then \((\chi,\lambda^G)_G=1\), for any linear character \(\lambda\) of \(U\).
