A two-degrees-of-freedom Hamiltonian dynamical system with the Hamiltonian (1) \(H={1\over 2}(p^ 2-q^ 2)+{1\over 4} q^ 4+{1\over 2}(x^ 2+ \root \omega^ 2\of {y^ 2})+\varepsilon q(p-y)\), i.e., the Duffing nonlinear oscillator coupled to the linear oscillator, is considered by means of the perturbation theory for \(\varepsilon\) small enough. Since the \((p,q)\)-subsystem has a trajectory of the homoclinic type, the perturbative treatment of the full system is based upon calculation of the Melnikov's function. It is proved that, for \(\varepsilon\) small enough, the full system has two subharmonic periodic orbits of order \(m\) (i.e., such that in the limit \(\varepsilon=0\) they correspond to the subharmonic resonance between the two subsystems, \(T_ q=m(2\pi/\omega))\), one elliptic and one hyperbolic. Then, a maximum width of the stochastic layer (homoclinic tangle) formed by the coupling in a vicinity of the homoclinic orbit of the unperturbed system, is found. The stochastic layers corresponding to the \(m\)th resonance are considered too, and it is shown that their widths are \(\sim \sqrt{\varepsilon/m}\). Results of detailed numerical simulations of the model (1) are reported too, and it is demonstrated that there is a good accordance between the analytical predictions and the simulations.
