Several authors have investigated the problem \(u'(t)=\int^ t_ 0a(t- \tau)Au(\tau)d\tau\), \(t>0\), \(u(0)=u_ 0\), where \(u(t):(0,\infty)\to X\), \(u_ 0\in X\), \(X\) is a Banach space, \(A:X\to X\) is a linear operator. The present authors study the perturbation problem (1) \(u'(t)=\int^ t_ 0a(t-\tau)Au(\tau)d\tau+F(u(t))\), \(t>0\), \(u(0)=u_ 0\), where \(F:(X\to X)\) is a nonlinear operator. They give conditions under which the problem (1) has a solution for \(t\in(0,\delta)\) or \(t\in(0,\infty)\). One of the conditions is \(\| F(v)-F(u)\|\leq L\|(-A)^ \alpha(v- u)\|\) for some \(\alpha\in(0,1)\). More carefully the authors study the problem (2) \(u_ t'+(f(u))_ x'=\int^ t_{-\infty}a(t-\tau)u''_{xx}(x,\tau)d\tau\), \(u(x,0)=u_ 0(x)\). In particular, they give conditions under which the problem (2) has a solution only on a finite interval \((0,t_ 0)\) even though the kernel \(a(t)\) is smooth and the initial data are small and smooth.
