A group is said to be subgroup separable if for every finitely generated subgroup \(H\) and element \(g\notin H\) there exists a subgroup \(K\) of finite index with \(g\notin KH\). A semisimple rational algebra is said to be virtually central if the center of the group of units of any \(\mathbb Z\)-order it contains is of finite index. Let \(\mathbb ZG\) be the integral group ring of a finite group \(G\). Based on methods of \textit{A. Olivieri, Á. del Río} and \textit{J. J. Simón} [Commun. Algebra 32, No. 4, 1531-1550 (2004; Zbl 1081.20001)], the authors establish that the group of units of \(\mathbb ZG\) is subgroup separable if and only if either \(\mathbb QG\) is virtually central or \(\mathbb QG\) has only one simple component which is not virtually central but the group of units of any \(\mathbb Z\)-order it contains is subgroup separable. Furthermore, an explicit list of groups \(G\) is provided encompassing all finite groups for which the group of units of \(\mathbb ZG\) may be subgroup separable, with only two among these groups for which subgroup separability is undetermined.
