This note deals with the following question: Suppose there are given two transfer matrices, a ''plant'' \(T\in R(s)^{p\times m}\) with rank \(T=p\leq m\) and a ''model'' \(M\in R(s)^{p\times q}\), together with a self- conjugate ''forbidden'' region \(\Omega\) \(\subset {\mathbb{C}}\). Under which conditions does there exist an \(\Omega\)-stable proper rational solution \(K(s)\in R(s)^{m\times q}\) of the exact model matching equation \(TK=M?\) The main result says that this equation is solvable if and only if the matrices T and [T M] have (i) the same pole structure in \(\Omega\) and (ii) the same zero structure in \(\Omega\) \(\cup \{\infty \}\).
