A direct interaction (DI) approximation-like theory is developed. Its motivation is to provide a computational simplification of Kraichnan's DI theory [\textit{R. H. Kraichnan}, J. Math. Phys. 2, 124-148 (1961; Zbl 0268.76038)]. The complexity of the latter theory is directly related to the occurrence of complete time history integrals in the expressions for the evolution of correlation functions. In the paper, a class of theories is presented in which the duration T of DI-like time history integrals appears as a free parameter. When T becomes large, DI approximation is recovered. For T relatively short, the theory is in close agreement with DI, but it is computationally much more efficient. This is accomplished by replacing the complete DI time history integrals by the evolution of the non-Gaussian correlations, keeping only the three point cumulant, which is updated at the end of every time integral of duration T. Numerical comparisons with DI for the case of the Zakharov equations are presented, with satisfactory results.
