Let \(m\) be a homogeneous function on \({\mathbb R}^n\) of degree \(0\) and the restriction on \(S^{n-1}\) belong to the space of spherical harmonics of degree \(k\in{\mathbb N}\). Then the Fourier multiplier \(T_m\) extends to a continuous operator on \(L^r({\mathbb R})\) with \(1<r<\infty\) (Stein's higher Riesz operators). In a group-theoretic view point, the set of \(T_m\) is a subspace of translation invariant operators on \(L^2({\mathbb R}^n)\) and forms an irreducible unitary representation of \(O(n)\). In this paper T. Kobayashi and A. Nilsson investigate the case of a discrete series representation of the indefinite orthogonal group \(O(p,q)\) if \(p>1\) and \(q>0\). Suppose that the restriction of \(m\) on the homogeneous space \(X_{p,q}\) \(=\) \(O(p,q)/O(p-1,q)\) belongs to the space of \(L^2\)-eigenfunctions of the Laplace-Beltrami operator with eigenvalue \(-k(k+p+q-2)\). Then \(m\) has a suitable asymptotic estimate and the set of \(T_m\) forms a dense subspace of a discrete series of \(O(p,q)\). By using techniques of representation theory of \(O(p,q)\), the authors obtain that \(T_m\) extends to a continuous operator on \(L^r({\mathbb R}^{p+q})\) with \(1<r<\infty\) if \(k>4\) and \(p+q\) is even or \(k>3\) and \(p+q\) is odd.
