Let \(FG\) be a group algebra of characteristic distinct from 2. There is an intensive research concerning group identities satisfied by subsets of the group of units \(U(FG)\), such as on nilpotency of symmetric units [the authors, J. Pure Appl. Algebra 214, No. 9, 1592-1597 (2010; Zbl 1198.16033)]. In a similar vein, the unitary subgroup \(Un(FG)\) has been considered by \textit{A. Giambruno} and \textit{C. Polcino Milies} [Manuscr. Math. 111, No. 2, 195-209 (2003; Zbl 1049.16020)]. The main result of the paper is the following extension of the classical result: In the modular case, \(Un(FG)\) is nilpotent if and only if \(U(FG)\) is nilpotent; in the non-modular case, provided \(K\) is algebraically closed, an analogous statement holds. Proofs are complicated as well as nicely formulated.
